Mindset (1)

The remarkable Garry Tonon talks about switching his mindset from playful (loose, screwing around, reactive) to winning for ADCC 2019, and he did get the fastest submission with his flying kani-basami to heel hook.

Two broad approaches
1) Reactive : Let’s see what he does and counter.
2) Proactive : Let’s take control of this match and win.

I’ve had 25 matches over the last 4 years, and my coaches have mentioned that I needed to “find the next gear”. At 43 y/o it’s not the same league of course, yet the dynamics are similar. I typically try to assess the situation and counter.

“learn something from each grip” (Rener Gracie, iirc)

Interestingly enough, it seems that Lovato Jr.’s Flow-Pressure-Finish could fit with both 1) and 2).

Mindset is a very interesting topic and I’ll need to revisit this post.

Mindset for Competition
Mindset for training.

Offering different types of resistance for different types of practice :
– Drilling for mechanics (low resistance, R&D)
– situational sparring for focused skill-acquisition (increasing resistance)
– hard rounds for cardio
– competition preparation
etc.
